Using Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers

For a targeted search:

  1. Choose Advanced Search in Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers (Library of Congress)
  2. Click on "Select State(s)" to limit newspapers to a specific state
  3. Limit your date range under "Select Year(s)"
  4. Use "With the phrase" search box when you want to group two or more search words
  5. Click "Search"

For the most emphasized stories of the day, click on "Show only front pages" and then look for pink highlighting of your term:

Use page tools to learn more and take a clipping of the article:

  1. Click on the "About" link to learn more about the newspaper
  2. Use the "All Pages" function to look at all of the pages saved for this issue
  3. To browse other Redwood Gazettes of this era, click on "All Issues"
  4. To take a clipping, use the tool with the scissors icon (you could also use your tool of choice); save as an image to be able to embed in a document or slide presentation
