America History and Life

America History and Life is a bibliography of articles, books, book reviews, and media reviews relating to the history of the United States and Canada from prehistory to present.  With coverage from 1895, the database indexes 1800+ journals published worldwide.  Strong English-language journal coverage is balanced by an international perspective on topics and events, including abstracts in English of articles published in more than 40 languages.

Hints for using AHL:

1. If you are looking for articles on a historical period (Great Depression, ante-bellum South, etc), use the Advanced Search option and use the Historical Period fields to search for a specific year (e.g. 1931) or a range of dates (e.g. 1865-1870).  

2. Take a look at the CLIO Notes link at the top of the page.  The CLIO Notes are brief overviews of periods in American history.  Each overview is broken down in to topics and includes a bibliography.  Each topic entry includes sample research questions and additional search terms.
